Preliminary evaluation
The camera techniques that we used were shot/ reverse shot and the 180 degree rule. We did have a match on action shot however due to editing difficulties we were unable to include it in our video, the problem was that the video was fuzzy for an unknown reason.
Storyline
We also tried to use a match on action however during editing we could not find a place to fit this camera technique into our film without interrupting the flow of the video.
In our sequence Darren, character A, walks through the door with a box filled with money. Grant, character B, is shown sitting at the table when Darren sits and places the money on the table. Grant then says a secret phrase, Darren confirms. Then Grant places the package on the table and they both switch packages. Darren smacks his face into the package and arises covered in residue from the product inside the box. Darren is dazed and confused as grant now has a horse head.
Script
Character B; Have you visited the alps this year.
Character A; Yes
Character B; (nods head)
Character A and B; push packages towards each other.
Character A; Places head in flour
Character B; Now has a horse head and leaves the room.

7) Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learned in the progression from it to the product?
I have progressed a lot since my preliminary task.
This is my preliminary task video, as you can see the camera quality is very bad, we used HD cameras for the final product, and the editing and camerawork is poor. Here I struggled to get the basic camera techniques such as match on action, this is because my knowledge of camera techniques and how to used the hardware including tripod was very limited. The story line in this video is also very poor this is because back then I didn't really know what made a good story. This changed a lot as i did some research and began to learn what made a good and interesting story that people will want to watch.
Above is my final product. Here you can see how I have learned to use all of the main camera techniques and also how my overall camerawork is a lot better. You can also see that the video quality in this video is very good in comparison to the preliminary tasks video, this is due to the fact that we were given HD cameras to film with which were a lot nicer than the old style cameras to film with.
As in the preliminary tasks video I had little experience in using the camera and tripod there for the camera seemed very shaky and UN-smooth, in the final product I was very confident in using all of the hardware the the camerawork was good and the video came out pretty smooth.
The lighting in the final product is also a lot better than in my preliminary video, this is because I learned how to utilize all of the light i had available to me in the final product where as in the preliminary I didn't really understand how lighting effected the quality of what I was filming. Research taught me a lot about the simple things like how light effects video.
The audio quality improved dramatically from the preliminary task to my final piece, this is because in the preliminary we were using a wired microphone which was extremely hard to work with and the sound quality wasn't that great, this is why movement in the preliminary task was very limited.
In my final product we used HD cameras which had a built in microphone of high quality. As a result of this the sound in our final product is very clear making things such as footsteps on the ground audible.
Diagetic sounds were used well in both of the videos, this is because in the preliminary task I had an understanding of what diagetic sound was and how it should be used, the microphone had a hard time picking up the diagetic sound in the preliminary task though.
Non diagetic sound was not used in the preliminary task as back then my editing skills were very limited and I didn't have the knowledge of how to put in things such as music. By the time i made my final product I was very confident in editing there for was able to put in some diagetic sound and also make it fit in with what was being portrayed on screen.
Continuity was maintained very well in the final piece however very poorly in the preliminary as the clothes appear to be different in scenes, this is as we filmed on different days and was unable to get hold of the same clothes. Continuity in the final product was good as all the clothes remain the same and everything that is going on on screen makes sense.
Continuity editing was maintained well throughout both the preliminary task and the final product, this is because I had knowledge about continuity editing when filming the preliminary and an even further understanding of continuity editing by the time it came to filming the final product.
Filming and editing for the preliminary task taught me a lot about what I needed to do to make a good product that people would want to see. Through research I learned how to correctly use all of the hardware and software which enabled me to create a good product by the time it came round to filming and editing my final product. Without making the video for the preliminary work my final product wouldn't be as good as it currently is . My preliminary task video taught me that I needed to create far better story lines and showed me what doesn't look good on camera so by the time
i made my final product I was able to use better camerawork and create a more interesting story line.

6) What have you learned from the technologies from the process of constructing this product?
The first piece of technology i learned to use in making this product was the Digital Camcorder.
I learned that I can make a good quality product with a HD camera which is a lot better than the standard definition cameras that I had to use for previous videos. I learned the best conditions in which to use the camera and how to place it to get good looking shots. Whilst filming my final product the weather and lighting want the best but by smart camera placing my shots still looked relatively good.
The next piece of hardware that i learned to use was the tripod.
As i have little experience with a tripod it took a little getting used to but as I began to get confident in using it I found that you can get some great shots when it is placed in the correct places, I could also get some nice pan shots thanks to the rotating top.
I also learned how to use some new software whilst making my final product, the first piece of software that I learned to use was Adobe Premiere Pro.
Adobe premiere pro is a video editing software, I really liked using this as it made editing our video quick and simple, it also allows you to add things such as text which made putting credits and title sequences into our video very easy. It is very easy to create a professional looking product when using Adobe premiere.
The next piece of software that I learned to use is Adobe photoshop. Photoshop is a graphics editing software in which i made our ident.
Over the course of making my final product there are a few internet sites that i have used to help me with things such as video promotion and audience feedback.
The first web site that i used is blogger. Blogger has helped my share all of my steps in preparing for my final product, it shows the journey of where I began and how my work has progressed over time. It shows things like prop lists, research, planning and all of the work that went into my final product.
Another web site that I used is youtube, youtube is where I have uploaded all of my previous video work and my final product it shows how my camerawork has improved and has got my work out there for potentially millions of people to see. Without youtube the ways of getting my work out to the masses would be very limited.
The final web site that i used was Survey Monkey, this helped me gather audience feedback to see what people wanted out of my final product and helped me decide on who I would be aiming my final product towards, the audience feedback helped me shape my product into what I thought the audience wanted based on the feedback.

5) How did you attract/adress your audience?
In order to attract and keep the attention of our audience we used a number of different thriller conventions, these included a build up of tension and and fast pace throughout the whole opeming.
The fast paced editing and music to match made our thriller a very exciting thing to watch, the story is quite interesting too. We also made the film from the people who we think are our target audience and the things they like in a thriller film.
People would continue to watch our film after the opoening as the opening is fast paced with lots of edits to add excitement to the film, the story line is also deep and interesting wehich would get people to watch the whole fim as the audience would want to find out what happened in the story for the characters to get in the situation in which they find themselves.
The surrounding of our thriller opening fitted the atmosphere that we wanted our opening to create, we shot in the middle of winter which gave us darker and a more interesting light that would fit the story that is going on. We also shot at the back of an empty park which was good as it gave the sense that the characters are alone in a remote location, this fitted the story of the characters.
This is the entrance to the park in which we filmd, this turned to be a very good location as the surrounding created the atmosphere that we wanted our thriller to have.

4) Who would be the audience for your media product?
From the audience research that i have carried our i have found that our media product would be best suited to young people. I think this is because everyone that features in our thriller are all young people so this might be why our media product appeals more to younger people.
As our audience feedback was all collated online this could be why the majority of feedback was from younger people as they tend to use the internet more than older people, this could mean that our audience feedback could guide us to cater for the incorrect audience as there were few replies from older people.
I think that our media product will appeal to people from a working class background, this is because all of the people that appear in our film are from a working class background so the working class might be able to associate with the characters in the film.
From the people who gave feedback on the finished product we saw that most people enjoyed the film, all of the people who watched the film were young working class people therefor i am unable to comment what people from other age categories and classes would think of the film.
This shows that people questioned in the audience feedback preferred the crime genre of films.
During the audience feedback i asked what genre of film they like the most and none of the people asked preferred thrillers, crime was the most popular, this tells me that the people asked are not the target audience for my media product.

3) What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
After some deep thought i have come to the conclusion that there are a small number of companies that could distribute our media product. Small companies such as film 4 and dogwoof would potentially be able to distribute our film to the masses. The big six wouldn't distribute our film as we are a small British company and don't have the recognition or budget of larger film companies.
This is the logo of a small distribution companies for low budget films, they could potentially distribute our media product however this is unlikely.
Also going straight to DVD could also be an option but not the best, this is partly due to the decline of DVD sales over time and also as we are a small independent company we wouldn't have the recognition for people to buy our product it would also be hard to find a company to retail the DVD.
This is film 4 who could potentially distribute our product on DVD though this is highly unlikely.
So after consideration i have decided that the best way to distribute our media product is through social media e.g. YouTube or Facebook. I chose this as this method is a free and easy way to distribute our film to the masses over a short period of time and also helps us get recognition and potentially get our product out to millions of people.

2) How does your media product represent particular social groups?
In our film the only social groups that are represented are white teenage males on the working class of society who take part in white collar crime.
This means our media product follows the stereotype that working class people take part in gritty crime, this means there is somebody more powerful telling them what to do behind the scenes which the viwer doesnt get to see.
The people in our media product are portrayed in a negative light as they are seen to be taking part in crimes and harming others to get what they want.
Other stereotypes are that the youth of today arent nice people and our media product meets this stereotypes.
Blue collar crime.
In our thriller the bosses are all men this meets a stereotype as it suggests that women have no authority, especially in serious things.
The target audience for our media product is young people as from our audience research we found that the main audience of thrillers is teenagers, this is because it is a fast paced high octane film which appeals to the majority of young people and less so to older people.

1) In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge of reral media products?
1) In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge of reral media products?
In our media product we used a number of thriller conventions. One of these conventions was the mucguffin. The macguffin was the usb stick which is pretty irrelivent but is needed to drive the story.
We also use d a number of camera techniques to add dramatic effect to what was happening on screen, the techniques we used was high and low andgles, this made some characters look tall and powerful whilst making others look small and weak. In our media product we challenged no conventions as the oppurtunity to do so didnt occour.
We also used a handheld shot which which gave our media product more realism and put across the type of product that our film is, this is also a thriller conbvention.
We used a number of effects to make our media product look like a more professional product, the main effects we used were transitions.

High angle shot.
From all of the thrillers that i have been studying i think that my media products is most similar to Psycho.

I thinks my media product is most similar to this as it isn't clear who the villain is from the beginning but as the clip goes on the viewer can work out who the good and bad people are, but it takes a while to get there.
Our media product doesn't challenge any media conventions as my group wanted our product to be as thriller like as possible.
Choosing font
When choosing font for our credits we decided to use a very simple white font, we decided to do this so attention isn't taken too much away from whats actually going on on screen. We also decided that the font should be white so that it can be read on a dark background. Our film is quite dark so the text is clearly seen on top of the film.
Finding music
In order to find music for out thriller project I went to youtube, typed in "Thriller music" and found some music that fitted into our video and was not copyrighted.
We was going to use mobygratis.com however you have to wait for a response to see if it is okay to use that music and the response time was to long therefor we was unable to use this for our music.

Collateral
Collateral was the first high budget blockbuster film to be filmed with digital cameras in a high definition format.
This is a trailer from the film, it is a good trailer as it gives us a small insight to the story and clips of the high octane scenes but does not give away too much of the story.
There are some scenes in the film where you can see digital cameras were used such as when you see the Los Angeles skyline.
There was a scene in the film when coyotes were running in the road and thanks to the digital cameras ability to film in low level light they were able to capture the moment and put it into the film.
The director used similar techniques in the television show Miami vice.
There was also some scenes of the film where the traditional 35mm film was used, an example of this is in the nightclub scene.
Above is the nightclub scene where traditional 35mm fil was used.
The film Collateral was co-produced by dreamworks and paramount pictures however the film was distributed by Universal. Also in 2006 Paramount pictures purchased dreamworks.
Originally Russel Crowe was set to play the role of Vincent however when the film was actually made Tom Cruise got the role.
Also Robert De Niro was set to play the role of Max but again once filming started they used Travis Bickle.
The film launched in August 2006 and grossed $24.7 million in its opening weekend.

Updated preliminary evaluation
The camera techniques that we used were shot/ reverse shot, the 180 degree rule and match on action. We needed to update this video as in the first one the match on action was cut out, so we had to re film the first part to get in the match on action, this also explains the lower resolution of the first part of the video.
Story line
We also tried to use a match on action however during editing we could not find a place to fit this camera technique into our film without interrupting the flow of the video.
